Thankfully there’s another option: rebuilding the Dewalt cordless drill battery–and it’s not as difficult as you might think.
Instructions
Step 1
Remove the screws holding the battery pack together. Pry open the pack with a flat-head screwdriver. Use a utility knife to cut plastic or labels if necessary. Remove the battery cells from the plastic case. Set the plastic cover pieces aside.
Step 2
Draw a diagram of how the cells are arranged in the battery pack and how the connecting metal strips or wire are positioned–this is critical for the proper reconstruction of your battery pack.
Step 3
Remove the connecting metal strips or wire with a soldering gun, being careful not to overheat the cells. Recycle the old batteries. Replace new batteries in the same position as the old. Solder connecting wire in place, touching the soldering gun to the battery end no longer than a second or two so as not to damage the battery. Visually inspect each connection when you are done.
Step 4
Insert the group of cells back into the plastic case and close it. Replace the screws in the battery pack. Recharge the battery pack and then power up your drill.

You can order new battery cells from online shops, or from a local store such as Batteries Plus. The outside of your battery pack tells you what kind of battery cells you need (e.g., nickel cadmium), and it tells you the total voltage (e.g., 9.6 volts). Give that information to the battery store, plus the number of cells inside, along with the Dewalt drill model number, and they will give you the battery cells you need.
