Question by optimus_124: Should I use a circular saw or table saw to cut 5/16, 3 inch hardwood in half?
I have measured my room out and it seems that I will need to split some boards. I know a table saw would do the job, but could a circular saw do the same thing. If so, what would I need to accomplish this?

Yeah, you can use a circular saw to rip lumber of that size. To get an accurate, straight rip you will need a “rip fence”. One came with your saw when you purchased it, but can be easily replaced if lost.
A table saw will be easier and more accurate.

    If you’re ripping the board (cutting with the grain), then use the table saw. If you are cross cutting (cutting across the grain), then use the circular saw.

    For a rip cut, you really need the fence, especially with 3″ width – too narrow for the sole plate of the circular saw, you’ll not get a square cut.

    You can use either one. I would use table saw.

    For me a table saw would be ideal, but that is my job. A circular saw would work with a saw guide, just be careful to watch for binding. If the edges are not going to be seen I would use a jig saw, to me the jig/saber saw would be the easiest/safest way. But that is just my opinion.

    Table saw will give you a straighter cut.

    I assume that you have both types of saws available to you? In any case I think that a power miter saw would be the best tool for the job.
